After scouting out possible proposal locations, David casually asked Jo if she wanted to go hiking sometime at Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Jo, unsuspecting, said yes. The next Sunday afternoon David packed a surprise picnic, snagged a bottle of Californian wine they had been saving for a special occasion, and they left for Saugatuck.
David, trying to appear spontaneous, paid no attention to the trail maps, although was very decisive in leading the hike. Jo thought this very unusual, but thought it was because David had previously been to the park (he had been, unbeknownst to Jo, one week earlier). Upon reaching Lake Michigan, they "just so happened" to find a nice private spot on top of a dune with a great view. The wine and picnic were enjoyed, although Jo wondered why David was so secretive about the picnic bag.
Then came time for dessert, something else David had been very secretive about. When Jo opened her dessert box, the ring was set on top of the whipped cream on her cheesecake. Upon seeing the ring, Jo (thoroughly surprised, despite David's strange behaviour), uttered a not-very-encouraging "What?!" but David pressed forward and popped the question. Recovering from her surprise, Jo happily accepted. They watched the sunset (awww) and then returned to Grand Rapids.
